Now as many of you who read the blog know, I really like music. A lot. I have a pretty wide range in musical tastes, and I like almost anything, except for most popular music (Ke$ha, Black Eyed Peas, etc.) But the only thing other than Justin Bieber's success that makes me upset is when people criticize my taste in music.
Now, I get it. Not everybody likes Green Day and Paramore (although they should...just kidding). It's okay if you say "They're not my thing" or "I'm not a huge fan of them." Something along those lines, something about how you just don't like them. But when people say "Fill-in-the-blank is awful" or "You like crappy music," that just pisses me off
Who are you to tell me that I like bad music? Musical tastes are based completely off opinions. This is like saying "You're an idiot! McDonalds is better than Burger King! We're not friends anymore." Okay, maybe it's not exactly like that, but you get the point. You don't have to like the bands that I like, but at least respect my opinion and don't insult me for liking the stuff that I do.
Another musically-related problem I have with people is when they absolutely will not give a genre of music a chance. For example, I have a friend who insults all hip hop music, and he's listened to maybe two hip hop songs in his life. Now, I'll admit that hip hop isn't the greatest musical genre ever devised by humans (clearly dance music is the best...or disco) but to be so opposed to all acts of a certain genre just because they fall into that genre is ludacris. (I spelled "ludicrous" wrong on purpose).
For example, I'm not the biggest country fan on the planet, but I like some country stuff. Like that really popular Lady Antebellum song. I don't even know what it's called, something about how it's a quarter after one...but the point is that I still listen to it, and I don't sit there and make fun of it just because it's country music.
So when you're discussing your favorite musical artists with your friends, please just try to remember that it's all based on opinions and nobody's wrong. Unless they like the Black Eyed Peas. I'm kidding, but not really.
And I'd like to extend my apologies to our ever-growing fan base for not writing as beautiful a blog post as my esteemed colleague did. I was actually going to write about how the Mets and Diamondbacks look like real baseball teams right now, but I decided to write on a semi-serious topic, to go with the theme that David started. Now it's time for bed though, because I need to get my rest! Nighty night.

Dear Josh (and David too),
ReplyDeleteSo this reminds me of the many times I have insulted Green Day and told you both that they are horrible. I guess what I should have said was that "I'm just not that into them" or something, but I am sorry for making fun of them so much (and also making fun of you for being in love with them). I've actually been listening to them a little bit lately and I've gained some respect for their music. Really, what I'm trying to get at is...you're right. They're kinda awesome.
Haha don't worry, no hard feelings. And if this were facebook, and I had to pick one part of that comment to like, I would like: "(Green Day) is kinda awesome."
ReplyDeleteExcellent work. :)
